DOVETAIL DRAWER HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Damon Nabors »

OK, I Just resurfaced the spoilboard and reset the switchspoil value, put on a new waistboard, measured it and changed the settings to reflect thickness. Remeasured all the tools.
I cut a batch of drawers and the male pins still have the skin ( maybe a circumcision would help  ) The other parts cut fine. I adjusted the cut through thickness and run the program again to see if it would make a difference, but it didn't. I would think maybe the daylight is off on that tool, but I measured it.

Any ideas?

Hey Damon,
I have never had this happen, are you using the same tool to do perimeter cuts in x and y? If so I dont think your tool measurment would be the culprit. If it is using two different tools, I would say your going to have to adj. the daylight on the one not cutting through by the thickness of the skin it is leaving. Is it all of the males or just some of them? Did you surface both sides of your waste board also?

Mike, I only surfaced one side of the waist board. The only areas that did not get cleaned up are the male pins. You can see in the pictures that everything looks good except in those areas. This is a 5 x 5 sheet of baltic birch with this problem scattered all over the sheet, only on the pins though.

Normally though, when I cut drawers, the score marks in the waistboard are deeper, than when I cut cabinet parts for some reason. I peeked under one of the parts this morning (I have not moved them, I was waiting for someone to respond) and the score marked are very shallow. I am going to set the cut through depth a little deeper and run the tool over them again to see what happens. :wall:

Sometimes I have to wonder, Is it just ME?

I have wondered about that, Does that make a difference? Shouldn't the top be flat regardless as long as the fly cutter is removing enough material? By the way I usually do surface both sides but do it because I seem to get better hold down. Joe

How thick is that skin Damon, if it is .015 or so you are going to be cutting the crap out of your waste board if you set deep enough to get through it. I would say your using a different tool somehow for that cut and it needs to be set. Yes I surface both sides of my waste board for better holding and also so that I know its perferctly flat. If you do one side, the other might have high or low spots that suck down differently depending on part location. Of course this might be a little Anal as I used to be a tool and die maker and .001 was a big deal and .002 meant your project was scrap....... Good luck, I am shutting the doors and going out to the woods in this beutiful snow were getting. Calling for 10-18 inches in the next 24hrs..

Damon,

Can you email the NC code to program@thermwood.com ? I would like to see exactly what is being posted out from Control Nesting.

Thanks,

I corrected the problem by adding more cut through depth, but you get a deeper score mark in the waistboard on the male pins vs the female pins. They are not the same. You can look at the waistboard everywhere they cut and the cut through depth is not the same on male vs female.

Damon,

That sounds more like a patch than a fix.

I still haven't gotten your original NC file. If you will send that to me I can see if I can find the problem.

Thanks,

Sorry Pete, I have been covered up trying to get everyone taken care of before the Holidays. I will try to get that file to you today, and yes it did put a bandaid on things untill we can get the problem fixed. But sometimes I have found that I have to improvise.
