Profile Modeler

Post by Josh Rayburn »

I cut out the bottom of a base cabinet and put a rabbet on the cutout to accept a separate hatch. No problems.
Now I'm trying to make the hatch - but I would like to radius the corners so it fits inside the radius left by my pocketing tool that is going to cut out the base cabinet's deck (3/8" tool).

I brought a cabinet back at the appropriate size into the part editor.
1. Select the fillet tool
2. set the fillet radius at .1875
3. select each corner and apply fillet
4. select profile tool, chain
5. select the lower left portion of the left side segment
6. choose a profile tool (I happen to have a 3/8" diameter flat bottom tool drawn in the shape manager, starting at -.1875,0 and 1" high so the tool is drawn at it's centerline and at y0)
7. Apply the tool, comp right, depth @ -.3625" (material is 0.725")
8. "sweep operation not possible"

I ultimately did this a different way and got the job done, just wondering why something so simple is so difficult / impossible / workaround required - if anyone happens to know what the problem is with this operation, I would welcome the enlightenment :)
Thanks

Josh,

This is a problem that has been holding up one of my projects for six months. I was told it is a Parasolid problem and the eCabinet guys are waiting for them to fix it.

I don't remember having this problem in earlier versions/builds.

Kerry, was your order of operations the same as mine?
Curious, have you been able to find a work-around?

Josh,

It happens in a number of scenarios. It started when I was using a larger tool on a tight radius and was told the tool could not cut over itself. Tried with a tiny tool and got the same results.

No I haven't found a workaround other than wait for it to be fixed.

Profiling in the part editor seems to be very troublesome these days. I get a lot of can't perform sweep operation and non-manifold body errors.

Josh,

Create your part with the outside radiuses and then create geometry .375" in from the edges (see my attached picture). Then create your profile edge from this geometry instead of the parts edges. I chose the lower left edge of the left vertical line and used a left hand comp. Seems to give me what you are looking for.

Thank you Scott, that's actually how I ultimately accomplished the task! I also realized when I did it this way, that I should fillet the inside of the rabbet also, because both the rabbet and the cut-through on the cabinet deck would use the same tool and would have the same radius. I would not have been able to do that if my original plan was successful - the radius offset to the inside would have resulted in a square. So in the end I'm happier with my product, but I wrote up the post thinking it might have been a bug in a simple operation. Thanks for the reply it's good to hear from you!

Kerry,

No, I am not saying that I am happy that the sweep errors can happen. I would love to have all of those cases fixed yesterday. I just tried to give Josh a way to get what he was after.
