How do i do this?

Post by Mark Hesketh »

when we make our upper corner cabinets, we make it with a 1/2\" back, inset 1/4\", with the back full-dadoed into the top and bottom, as well as the gables. is there a way so that the top, bottom, and gables could have this dado cut for the back right to the edge of the material? right now it leaves a 1/4\" strip on the outside, which makes it a pain for the guys to assemble the cabinet. the only way i can think of is to create a cabinet with a 3/4\" back with no inset, and not cut the backs, then create a second cabinet and only cut the 1/2\" backs from that.

i have tried taking the parts into the part editor and creating a pocket to cut away the material, but it comes up with an error every time.

any suggestions would be welcome!

You can use blind dado and set the thickness to 150% of material thickness (in back construction parameters).

It leaves a funny looking lip on the sides of the back but the dado is correct.

Oh...you will also have to set all of the tenon placement values to 0\".

Thanks Dan, I will give that a shot.

... it's not going to give me any issues at the machine, is it?

I couldn't tell you whether it will create any CNC issues. I wouldn't think so since the back is 1/2\" material. Just double check the CNC code to see before machining it.

ok, if the nesting within ecabinets is any indication. this won't machine well at all. here are some screen captures of how the material nests. note the dado (?) across the top and bottom of the unit, and the backs are completely screwed... the holes start wayy off the sheet, etc.

I had all of the tenon placements at 0\" instead of -1/2\". I don't know whether that will make any difference or not at the machine though.

tried setting them to zero, still get some funking looking nest layouts... and it also leaves the dadoes in the gables a little short

I think you are probably stuck with using 3/4 material for the backs.

Hey, you can create a 3/4 material and name it something like \"This is really 1/2\" back\"

yeah, that's more or less what I am setting up now. one of the drawbacks though is that they won't nest with the rest of the 1/2\" backs. oh well.
